Engineering Troubleshooting: Correcting Web Registration and Sealing Mold Crushing

Engineering Note: This technical troubleshooting documentation was originally published in 2019. It has been comprehensively updated on November 1, 2026, to reflect current kinematic calibration standards and thermal management protocols for platen-type sealing architectures.

In intermittent platen-type Blister Packaging Machines, absolute kinematic synchronization is mandatory when transferring the formed web into the sealing station. If the formed blister cavities fail to align concentrically with the receptacles of the sealing mold, the mechanical closing force will irreversibly crush or deform the pockets. This registration failure compromises primary packaging integrity and requires immediate diagnostic intervention.

Diagnostic SOP: Web Registration Failure and Sealing Mold Crushing
  • 1. Kinematic Indexing Deviation: Measure the cut waste web progression lengths. If the stroke-to-stroke longitudinal variance exceeds 1.0 mm, the indexing servo or mechanical drive is failing to advance the web by a consistent pitch. This requires professional recalibration by technical support.
  • 2. Station Pitch Misalignment: The physical distance between the forming and sealing stations may be mechanically out of phase with the index stroke. Manually actuate the longitudinal adjustment handwheel on either station to micro-adjust the distance and re-establish synchronous alignment.
  • 3. Lateral Track Drift: Improperly secured orientation tracks (guide rails) bridging the forming and sealing modules can induce lateral web skew. Re-align and secure the guide rails to ensure absolute web parallelism.
  • 4. Thermal Web Distortion: Insufficient cooling at the tooling stations can cause the PVC web to warp, shrink, or stretch before entering the sealing zone. Increase the volumetric flow rate (flux) of the industrial water chiller or reduce the setpoint temperature to stabilize material thermodynamics.
