The Heritage of Jornen: From Engineering Roots to Global Automation
Based on a 2013 retrospective with Founder Yang Yijun
The Engineering Genesis (1986–1989)
Yang Yijun’s journey into the pharmaceutical packaging industry was driven by a deep foundation in mechanical design and early entrepreneurial ventures in hardware manufacturing. In 1986, anticipating a national shift toward advanced aluminum-plastic pharmaceutical packaging, Yang initiated the independent R&D of blister packaging equipment. Overcoming significant technical barriers and relying on self-taught mechanical expertise, he dedicated years to comprehensive market research and structural drafting, analyzing packaging mechanics from both domestic and international perspectives.
In 1989, this rigorous engineering phase culminated in the launch of the DGB-250 Multifunctional Automatic Blister Packaging Machine. Introduced at the Shanghai Autumn Pharmaceutical Equipment Fair, the prototype’s robust structure and precise functionality marked a significant industry milestone and established the foundation of the company.
Quality-Driven Expansion and Industry Recognition
The technical integrity of the DGB-250 quickly garnered industry authority. In 1991, the machine was designated a “Zhejiang Elite Product” and awarded the Gold Medal at the Third National New Technology Exhibition.
Under Yang’s leadership, the company prioritized engineering reliability and post-installation support over aggressive sales tactics. His philosophy dictated that complex pharmaceutical equipment—such as blister packers, cartoners, and capsule fillers—must rely on operational stability and word-of-mouth validation. Furthermore, Yang fostered a culture of internal talent development. By continuously raising the technical standards of his engineering teams, he inadvertently cultivated a highly skilled workforce that elevated the entire regional pharmaceutical equipment manufacturing base in Ruian.
Modernization and Global Operations
To ensure sustainable long-term development, the enterprise executed a strategic relocation in 2000, acquiring 37,000 square meters (56 mu) in the Songjiang District of Shanghai. The 26,000-square-meter Phase I facility was designed under the principle of integrating modern machining, standardized production lines, and rigorous enterprise management.
To maintain its competitive edge, Jornen heavily expanded its R&D capabilities, fully integrating CAD, CAPP, and CAM systems. The manufacturing floor was upgraded with advanced CNC machining centers and high-precision wire-cutting equipment. Simultaneously, the implementation of a comprehensive ERP system streamlined finance, production, and supply chain data.
Quality assurance was formalized into a strict four-stage protocol: Machining Inspection, Assembly Verification, Commissioning Validation, and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT). This accountable, traceable quality control system ensures that every machine meets stringent international standards before deployment.
Today, Jornen’s pharmaceutical packaging lines operate in over 70 countries and regions worldwide. Driven by continuous technical exploration and an unwavering commitment to precision engineering, the company stands as a global leader in the pharmaceutical packaging machinery sector, backed by 17 national patents and recognition as a High-Tech Enterprise.
