Engineering a Multiple Tube Feeder for High-Speed Square Tablet Packaging

1. The Geometric Challenge of Square Formats

Pharmaceutical and nutraceutical solid dosage forms increasingly utilize unique geometric shapes for brand differentiation. However, non-standard formats introduce significant handling complexities. Unlike standard round or convex tablets that roll smoothly, square tablets feature flat edges and rigid right angles. During high-speed gravitational feeding, these physical characteristics frequently induce interlocking and bridging within standard feeding chutes, obstructing product flow. Furthermore, if the tablet’s edge thickness is not optimally controlled, internal chute pressure causes the tablets to act as wedges, leading to twinning (overlapping) or inversion. This results in empty blister cavities, product fracture, and unacceptable equipment downtime.

2. Customized Multiple Tube Feeder Architecture

To resolve the geometric bottlenecks of square tablet processing, JORNEN engineers developed a customized Multiple Tube Blister Feeder. Configured for a continuous-motion packaging web, the system relies on three core engineering pillars to achieve maximum volumetric fill rates:

    • Three-Tier Gating System: The feeder architecture utilizes a strictly synchronized three-tier tray mechanism. The Upper Tray applies high-frequency micro-vibration to overcome the frictional resistance of the tablet corners, guiding them into custom-profiled vertical tubes. The Middle Tray functions as an escapement, isolating the column and releasing exactly one tablet per cycle. The Lower Tray executes terminal millimeter-level alignment directly above the blister cavities.
    • Servo-Driven Reciprocal Tracking: Because the primary forming web operates on a continuous-motion principle, the entire feeder assembly is mounted on a servo-driven reciprocal tracking carriage. Upon actuation, the dispensing module accelerates to match the precise velocity of the advancing web, deposits the entire tablet index synchronously without halting the film, and rapidly retracts to its home position. This tracking motion significantly extends the safe deposition time window, which is critical for stabilizing irregular shapes at high speeds.
    • Optimized Internal Tube Clearances: Utilizing exact tablet dimensions and pressing tolerances, engineers applied 3D kinematic simulation to calibrate the internal clearances of the vertical feeding tubes to their physical limits. The precise tolerance allows the square tablets to descend freely under gravity while mechanically restricting any rotational or tilting movement, fundamentally eliminating the root cause of tube blockages.

3. Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) Validation

During the comprehensive Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) executed in September 2026, the custom Multiple Tube Feeder demonstrated exceptional mechanical stability. Operating at full commercial production speed, the square tablets maintained a continuous, jam-free flow into the designated cavities.

The integrated Laetus Vision Inspection System validated the mechanical performance, registering a 100% volumetric fill rate. The visual data confirmed that every square tablet was deposited perfectly flat in the correct posture—free of flipped edges or chipped corners—establishing an optimal foundation for the downstream sealing station.
